- 2D (two-dimensional). These barcodes are square-shaped, made up of small black and white squares, and can store up to 2.000 characters without needing to refer to a database. Examples of two-dimensional codes include QR Code, Data Matrix, and PDF417.
How do barcode card readers work? Barcode cards are read using an optical scanner: by focusing the barcode with the device, the optical sensor scans its black and white lines, extracting the information encoded in the barcode and making it available for use.
