BARCODE CARDS

Barcode cards are characterised by the printing of a barcode, QR Code or Data Matrix on the back of the card. Barcode cards are secure, because with this type of technology the data is fixed and unchangeable.

Barcodes are used to uniquely identify products or data quickly and accurately, and they are classified into two categories:

  • 1D (one-dimensional). On cards with one-dimensional barcodes, the information is organised horizontally, depending on the width of the bars and spaces, and is read from left to right. One-dimensional barcodes can store 20-25 characters and are suitable for identifying products whose information frequently changes. The 1D code that identifies the product serves as a link to a database containing dynamic, variable data about the product, such as price, description, and manufacturer’s code.
  • 2D (two-dimensional). These barcodes are square-shaped, made up of small black and white squares, and can store up to 2.000 characters without needing to refer to a database. Examples of two-dimensional codes include QR Code, Data Matrix, and PDF417.

How do barcode card readers work? Barcode cards are read using an optical scanner: by focusing the barcode with the device, the optical sensor scans its black and white lines, extracting the information encoded in the barcode and making it available for use.

The standards defining the dimensions and characteristics of barcodes are:

  • EAN 8, EAN 13 - International Standard ISO/IEC 15420
  • Code 128 - International Standard ISO/IEC 15417
  • Code 39 - International Standard ISO/IEC 16388
  • Data Matrix - Standard ISO/IEC 16022
  • QR Code - International Standard ISO/IEC 18004
