Barcode cards are a type of card with a barcode, QR code, or Data Matrix printed on the back. This technology allows identification through optical scanning. The data associated with the barcode is fixed and cannot be changed after printing.

BARCODE CARDS: THE MAIN APPLICATIONS

Barcode cards allow for quick and accurate scanning of information. Their versatility enables them to be used for numerous applications:

  • Barcode cards for loyalty programs. Loyalty cards with barcodes are used in the Large-Scale Retail distribution and Retail industry to profile and retain customers. Barcode fidelity cards help create a bond with customers through point collection schemes, dedicated offers, and discounts.

  • Gift cards with barcodes. These are cards loaded with a monetary value — of variable amount and duration — that can be spent in the store or chain of stores that issued them. Thanks to their versatility, barcode gift cards are a popular gift idea.
  • Barcode cards for events. Barcode cards for access control regulate access to concerts, sporting events, and other types of events.
  • Barcode card for gym membership. These cards are used by gyms and sports federations to identify members. Membership barcode cards are also widely used in cultural associations and non-profit organisations.
  • Library cards. Library cards with barcodes are a useful and convenient tool for identifying members, allowing for the monitoring of book loans and returns.

HOW TO READ WITH A BARCODE?

Barcode cards can be read using an optical reader: when the barcode is positioned in front of the device, the optical sensor scans its black and white lines, extracting the information encoded in the barcode and making it immediately available for use. This technology is simple, reliable, and widely used in areas such as identification and loyalty programs.

The barcodes on the cards follow international standards that define their size, structure, and reading methods. The main standards include:

  • EAN 8, EAN 13 – International Standard ISO/IEC 15420
  • Code 128 – International Standard ISO/IEC 15417
  • Code 39 – International Standard ISO/IEC 16388
  • Data Matrix – Standard ISO/IEC 16022
  • QR Code – International Standard ISO/IEC 18004
